Branford High School has run the Lunch With the Law program for the better part of the school year, which in collaboration with police officers from the town, aims to extend knowledge of the police and justice system, as well as general safety, to BHS students.
John Albinger, who runs the program, is a Criminal Justice teacher at the high school. With the help of Detective Dave Atkinson of the Branford Police Department, their mission is to students about current dangers in community and provide education on how to stay safe.
Albinger and Atkins sit in the cafeteria during second lunch on ‘A Days,’ and they’re open to any students who want to discuss the law.
“The initiative aims to help create a safe environment for the BHS community. The meetings are friendly, informal, and organized to allay any fear or panic,” said Albinger to The Buzz.
“The program [was] started by the Branford Police Department in conjunction with Branford High School, seeking to improve the relationships forged between the Police and the students here at BHS,” he followed up.

Although, the main goal is to assist the students in answering questions regarding police action and safety, it’s also a good starting point for students interested in a career in law enforcement to learn more.
The program also combines with other clubs and organizations at BHS to work together on certain projects. They have several members of the BHS faculty and student body involved, as well.
“Currently we are working with Mrs. Stackpole and one of her health classes in forming a student safety lesson in terms of internet safety and other forms of personal safety precautions,” Albinger said.
“This program is open to everyone, including staff members. Many staff members will stop by and say ‘Hi’ or ask questions, which is great!”
All are welcome to stop by the duo’s table in a cafeteria, meeting every week on ‘A Days,’ during the second lunch wave.
