With the dawn of another school year comes new insight, and with almost 200 ninth grade students entering BHS this year, there has already been a big adjustment for the school’s most recent arrivals. 

When asked to describe their first day in one word, Branford High’s newest students gave a variety of answers, ranging from “exciting,” to “nervous,” to “tiring.” They shared how the new environment was overwhelming for some, but many also found it exciting to experience high school life for the first time. In the midst of returning students, most freshmen talk about enjoying meeting new people and getting to know them, most sharing that lunchtime was the highlight of their day. 

“Sometimes it’s hard to get used to having classes where you might not know anybody, so I enjoyed lunch and seeing familiar faces such as my friends’,” said Sufia Ali.

As far as teachers and classes, the students told us that they liked their teachers, using words like “friendly, helpful & funny.”  While having expectations of walking into classes with strict or challenging topics, they were met with flexibility in the curriculum, which adjusted to their level well and was greatly appreciated.

Kenji Chiriboga, Kepler Dagou and Grace Salter said they are excited for sports and school events. When asked about what they’re looking forward to, other students, such as Heather Jennings, talk about being happy to see their older siblings during school hours. Meanwhile, Christmine Ekebuisi mentioned she is “looking forward to becoming a “better version of herself” and improving in many aspects. 

What is the easiest way to spot a freshman? When you see them wandering the halls confused! It’s hard learning where classes might be in the first days of school, and while some 9th graders navigate their way easily, most share their experiences in getting lost.

Evan Bah said she got lost four times just the first day, along with many others. Some students talk about using maps to find their way, while others try to recognize people from classes to figure out where they are. Regardless of their first-day-problems, the freshmen have started finding out how to cover easier routes to class now that the first week of school has ended, adjusting to the building and schedules well.

Several teachers have said they are impressed with how the freshmen are adjusting to the cell phone policy, drop-two schedules, and the high school overall.

Ms. Mutuski added that some 9th graders are still getting used to the fact that BHS is not team-taught and that we are accountable to a number of new teachers. Finally, Mr. Biondi had a suggestion and a few words of encouragement for the 9th graders.

“First and foremost, join a team, club or an after school activity,” Biondi said. “There are so many opportunities to be involved after school at BHS. Furthermore, enjoy each day with the challenges that the day will bring. Lastly, if you need help, don’t hesitate to reach out to a teacher, counselor or coach for assistance and guidance.”

Though the first days brought challenges and many different emotions, it’s clear that the class of 2029 is already finding its way – both through the halls and into high school life.
