The Branford Buzz was named the top newspaper in its class in all of New England, the New England Scholastic Press Association (NESPA) announced earlier this month.
At its May 1 spring convention at Boston University, NESPA named Branford High School’s student newspaper the first place All New England co-winner for online newspapers in Class II — schools with between 751 and 1,500 students, according to a press release from the NESPA.
The school shared first place laurels with the Lancer Spirit from Londonderry, New Hampshire.
It’s the first All-New England honor for The Branford Buzz and its adviser, Christian “Bing” Miller. Owen Lentner, Vesa Bejleri, Lucy Mitchell, and Zara Serrano were the 2025-2026 student leaders for the paper.
“I’m just humbled and honored the newspaper earned an award of this caliber,” Miller said. “It’s truly a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone, our entire staff. They have really stepped up their game this year. In fact, it’s the biggest staff we’ve had in recent years and we’ve had some real energy and momentum this year.”
In addition to a growing staff this school year, the newspaper also underwent other significant changes, including a general redesign and a transition to a new publishing platform. The Buzz is now hosted by School Newspapers Online, a national organization devoted to hosting and managing high school and college news sites.
The Branford Buzz is led by a staff of BHS students, who report on and write stories, take pictures and maintain social media accounts. The publication has been in existence since 1938 and has undergone several different name changes over the years. It is currently an online-only publication dedicated to providing news and information to the entire Branford High School community.
