MLK Day speaker coming to BHS

By Owen Lentner

This year, as it has every year since 1985, Branford High School will hold a breakfast and host a motivational speaker to commemorate the works of Dr. Martin Luther King.

This year’s keynote speaker will be Dr. Jeffery Stewart, who teaches Black Studies at The University of California Santa Barbara and has curated major exhibitions to the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. Dr. Stewart, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, is also a motivational speaker and philosopher, giving numerous lectures at Harvard University, Yale University, UCLA, Tufts University, Howard University, and the University of Rome.

“Now more than ever [non-violence] is such an important topic to discuss. As we head into Black History Month, of course that’s perfect.” said teacher Mindy Baker, who is part of coordinating the event at BHS.

Sponsored by “The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Heritage Foundation,” all are invited to hear Dr. Stewart’s speech and enjoy breakfast. Breakfast will be provided by the high school’s own “Cooking for a Cause Club” lead by Baker, who teaches culinary arts at BHS.

Baker concluded on how both her and her fleet of volunteer chefs are truly grateful that the Board of Education is hosting this event.

The event will be held on Monday, January 20th, at 8:30am at Branford High School. Tickets can be purchased at this LINK – it is $5 for students and $20 for adults (breakfast included). All proceeds go to supporting scholarships to students from the non-profit organization hosting the event.

All are invited to enjoy breakfast and the speech of Dr. Stewart this Monday and, to remember Dr. King’s work and dedication to equal rights for all.
