They are entertaining, filled with the holiday spirit, inclusive to everyone with its broad genres, and not to mention, a tradition for many.
Some popular genres of holiday movies are romance comedies, horror, action and comedy. It is scientifically proven by research universities that these movies help reduce stress and promote happiness. Composed of nostalgia, romance, thriller, joy, and so much more; these movies are a must.
Holiday movies bring a whole different magic to the holidays with their diverse and fun genres; ranging from romance to mystery to thriller.
According to Rotten Tomatoes, fans favorite movies consist of “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” “The Grinch,” “Klaus,” “Elf,” “Christmas Bloody Christmas” and many others.
One of the most popular genres could arguably be rom-com where the starstruck lovers magically get together at the end of the movie.
Another favorite for families is the comedy classics that people could laugh out loud and relate each other to. You could also never go wrong with classic action, packed with intense scenes revolving around the holiday time. Another genre that shouldn’t be overlooked is the horror bit. The red man who is an expert at breaking, a perfect story for a fright. There’s a movie for everyone’s taste.
There’s a deeper reason why we love these movies so much. They are scientifically shown to improve our mood. A good holiday movie is best to “boost mood and relieve symptoms of depression by providing an escape from daily stressors and increasing perspective-taking,” according to Fielding Graduate University.
Nostalgia is everyone’s best friend. Who doesn’t like a little blast from the past? Watching these movies helps us remember the simpler, happier, and more hopeful days.
According to Wildschut and Sedikides, “the positive emotions in the movies help reduce stress-inducing hormones like cortisol which helps improve relationships and inspire new hobbies.” Not to mention the predictable happy endings help our brains find comfort knowing the ending patterns.
So grab a few blankets, and a hot cup of cocoa, and nuzzle in to watch a holiday movie. No matter what genre appeals to you, this holiday season will have it down.
