As the school year turns to October, many members of the BHS community may have already had the opportunity to meet all the new teachers and staff at Branford High School. To help introduce the new staff to BHS, The Branford Buzz began featuring the new teachers last week. Over the coming days, The Buzz will be publishing Q & A interviews with all the new staff members.
Today’s feature is on Mrs. Jessica Cyr, who is a special education teacher.
Subject: Special Education
Classroom location: A10
Why did you become a teacher?
I became a teacher because I enjoy helping people exceed their potential. Some students take private piano, skating, or batting lessons. Even Lebron James has a special meditation coach to help improve his game. Math and reading might not be as fun as individualized instruction in golf, but it is the same idea.
What is your background and how did you end up here at BHS?
I have been working in schools for over 20 years as a parent volunteer, para and a Special Education teacher. My family moved down to the area this summer and I wanted to find a school community that was as wonderful as the one that I was previously working in.
What do you like about BHS?
I like that all of the teachers have been very welcoming to the new staff. The students are really helpful as well when I am lost and have to find a new room.
Tell me about your family or your interests.
My husband and I have three sons who are 24, 22 and almost 19. Next year, I will have a daughter in-law as well. We love spending time together and vacationing at the beach. I spend a lot of time outside and today (Sept 15) is my 3,100th day of walking or running at least 1 mile every day. I also LOVE to bake. I just made a cake that looked like my daughter in law’s dog.
What is a favorite book, song, movie, or TV show and why?
My favorite movie is Grease. It was a movie that I loved since I was a child. The songs are great and I love the 50’s time period.
