Calliope, BHS’s magazine of student writing and artwork, has just published its 50th issue. It is available now from Mr. Matthiessen in room F14 for just $1.
Appropriately, the issue’s front cover prominently features an acrylic painting of a slice of cake by senior Evie Kaiser. Kaiser’s work has been featured multiple times in Calliope during her years at BHS.
The pages inside the issue include a variety of paintings, drawings, and photography, with stories and poetry interspersed throughout.
On page 3 is a short story by senior Rowan Rondinone, a student who has contributed multiple pieces of artwork and writing to Calliope while at BHS. “I’ve always loved writing, and if other people enjoy reading it, that’s just a bonus,” said Rondinone, who is attending Bennington College in the fall to study psychology and education “It’s been a fun challenge to think up pieces for Calliope.”
A senior featured twice in this issue is Hannah Jackson, who has also worked on the Calliope staff since she was a freshman. Hannah, who is attending Central Connecticut State University and will be studying studio art, said “Calliope has been a great way to share my artwork with others. I have really enjoyed being a part of the club the past few years, and I encourage other students to join and contribute their work! It is a great way to meet other students with similar creative interests.”
The back cover features one last digital graphic by senior Nayelie Torres Colon, who will be working after graduation and plans to get her driver’s license. “I’ve enjoyed sharing my work in Calliope, and best of luck to the students carrying on the tradition next year!”
