Victories from Girl’s swim, boy’s soccer and volleyball better their records for the post season. The boy’s football team had their by week, returning to the home turf for their next game.
Boy’s Soccer vs. Bassick(5-2 W): To start off the week the boys came back being down 2-0 in the first half when senior and tri-captain Cody McCarns scored the first goal, opening the gates for Branford. The first goal was assisted by junior Din Durmic.
Junior Ralph Ciarleglio scored the second goal for the Hornets with an assist by junior Justin Fatheree. Ciarleglio also scored off of a penalty kick earned by sophomore Sebby Verdesoto. Durmic scored the fourth goal for Branford, and junior Matt Cordero scored the fifth and final goal, a header off of a cross.
Junior and Keeper Alec Aceves-Acosta was a key player of the game, making great saves that kept Branford in for victory.
Girl’s Swim vs. Shelton(83-79 W): The girl’s swim team traveled to Shelton to defeat them in the pool for the first time in a few seasons. Branford’s relays successfully were able to take first place in addition to their individual events, placing in the top and earning enough points for victory.
Continuing to train hard, many girls continue to produce best times as well as best lifetime swims. Sophomore Mareyna McCaughtry earned a best time in the 100 free and Shae Lepre in the 500 free. The girl’s now have a record of 4-3.
Girl’s Field Hockey vs. Amity(2-1 L): The girl’s traveled to Amity in a very close game throughout the entirety out of it. Within the last minutes of the game Amity scored to earn themselves a victory.
Senior Karly King had a great game, doing an amazing job guarding an opponent from Amity. Senior Brianna Shaw was responsible for the goal from Branford, with an assist by Senior Molly Zaffino.
Girl’s Volleyball: Throughout the week the girls took on North Haven, East Haven and Jonathan Law. On Monday the girls played North Haven and took defeat in all three sets. Against East Haven they were able to come back strong and earn victory, winning two out of the three sets, only losing the third set by five points. To finish the week on Friday against Law, they competed closely going back and forth in scoring, but lost each set by few points.
Boy’s Soccer vs. Hand(2-1 L): Hand scored the first goal in the first half and then a freekick in the beginning of the second half to win the game. After Hand’s second goal, Branford controlled the rest of the game. They were able to score one goal by sophomore Dimitrios Gionteris off of an assist by S. Verdesoto.
Girl’s Swim vs. Lauralton Hall(L): The girl’s swim team was defeated by Lauralton Hall, a strong opponent when they traveled to compete in their pool. Despite the loss, there were still best times from many girls.
Junior Nicola Colossale dropped time in the 200 IM, senior Adrienne Dillon in the 100 fly, senior Ellie Bartlett in the 50 free, and junior Katie Parsell in the 500 free.
The girls will be swimming Foran, away, on Thursday the 17th of October.
Girl’s Soccer vs Hamden(2-1 W): After a tied game against North Haven earlier in the week, the girls were able to defeat Hamden on Saturday. Many girls also played for important people in their life, as it was their Cancer Awareness game.
To start off the game junior Alayna Boileau scored the first goal off of a free kick into the top left corner to go over the keeper. In the beginning of the second half Hamden scored their first goal to tie the game but Branford was able to come out back on top with a goal scored by freshman Ava Ferrie, assisted by senior Rose Lockery. Sophomore and keeper Macey Girard had many great saves that kept Branford in the game and allowed for their victory.
Girl’s Cross Country at Wickim State Park: Girl’s cross country traveled to Wickim State Park in an invitational meet that consisted of hundreds of runners. The runners had to run up the famous “Green Monster,” a huge hill on the course with many other tough obstacles.
For varsity, senior Juli Dillon, sophomore Isla Lionetti, junior Steph Toste sophomore Abby Polowitz and sophomore Bella Finta all ran in the lineup.
Hannah Jackson and Marina Smiarowski placed 11th and 45th place, earning metals in the freshman race.
