Summer has finally arrived and there are plenty activities for any student to partake in this summer. Believe it or not, there are books out there that are actually fun to read. Whether you may enjoy escaping into a magical world or staying close to reality, there is something for you. Here are my top five suggestions for this summer:
Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
This book follows an assassin named, Celeana, after serving her sentence in the salt mines in Endovier. She is then called on to compete in a series of events to become the King’s Champion. This book is the first installment in an ongoing fantasy series. It is also in the running for the YA Nutmeg Award. It’s fourth book, Queen of the Shadows, will be out in September. This book is great for those who crave adventure with magical elements.
Looking For Alaska by John Green
This best-selling book has been included in many high school summer reading lists. It follows Miles Halter as he goes off to boarding school at Culver Creek. There, he makes friends, including Alaska. Tragedy strikes and everyone is changed forever because of it. This book has received the Printz award. This book is good for someone interested in a contemporary novel that isn’t light hearted. This title is also on the Branford High School’s summer reading list for 10th grade.
We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
This book follows the Sinclairs, a family that owns a private island that they all visit in the summer. Narrated by Cadence Sinclair Eastman, readers will see the family secrets unfold before them. No more information on the plot can be given or it would spoil the entire story. This book is great for anyone seeking a dark and mysterious novel. It also deals with family scandal.
To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han
This book follows Lara Jean who would always writes letters to previous crushes in order to get over them. However, she finds out that someone mailed out her letters to each person. The reader then follows Lara in the after math of it all. The sequel, P.S. I Still Love You, has come out recently. This book is light hearted and a quick read. It should satisfy those who enjoy romantic comedies.
Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
This book follows Blue Sargent, who was told by her psychic family, that her true love would die. It also follows Gansey and his friends who attend Aglionby. They are in search of the lost Welsh king. Their paths intertwine in the book and everything changes. This book is also the first book in an ongoing series. (The fourth and final book should be out next year.) This book is for students interested in the paranormal.
All of these books can probably be found at Blackstone Library or online. What is something fun you are reading? Let us know in the comments or @branfordbuzz on Twitter.
