The 2014-2015 Winter Sports season has been an extremely successful one for Branford High School. There has been a lot to be excited about from The Dance team, to the Boys Track team, to Wrestling, to Boys and Girls hockey.
The Dance team snagged a pair of CIAC State Titles in Hip-Hop and Jazz in the Small School division. They advanced to the New England Regionals where they placed 1st in Jazz and 2nd in Hip-Hop.
The Wrestling team saw Junior Dakota Carden stretch his win streak to 71 straight matches before losing in the State Open Championship to a wrestler from Danbury. Carden, alongside Senior Captain Nick Temple, were Class M State Champions in their respective weight classes. At the State Open both Carden and Temple placed in the top 6 with Carden finishing 2nd and Temple 5th. Both wrestlers had outstanding seasons and were extremely pleased with their success.
The Boys and Girls Track teams had over 2 dozen individuals and relays qualify for the Class M State Championships. They came out of the event with two State Champions. Senior Captain Alyssa Case won the girls pole vault with a jump of 9 feet. The other State champion was the Boy’s 4×800 meter relay team lead by a senior quartet of Luke Arsenault, Ryan Connell, Nathan D’Amico, and Alec Janis. This group along with Alyssa Case and 55m Hurdler Claira Janover advanced to the State Open. The Boys 4×800 team finished 5 with a time of 8:15 to move on and advance to the New England Championships. Here the senior group of Arsenault, Connell, D’Amico, and Janis ran a time of 8:12.65, which placed them 9th.
The Girls Hockey Co-op team of Branford, North Branford, and East Haven won its 2nd consecutive SCC Division 2 championship. They finished with their best record in program history recording a record of 13-3 in the regular season.
The Boys Hockey team concluded the regular season with a record of 14-5-1. They began the postseason last week with two convincing wins to capture their 3rd SCC Division II Championship in 4 years.
They kicked off the State tournament Tuesday March 10th against Daniel Hand with a 4-0 win. After defeating Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe on Friday night, 3-2, they are slated to play Suffield-Granby-Windsor Locks on Monday at Ingalls Rink in New Haven.
