Last year girl’s soccer, and girl’s cross country had the most successful seasons at BHS. Soccer concluded the year Class MM state runners up and cross country won the Class MM state championship. This season looks to be a chance at another great finish in Class MM for Coach Kevin Connell and the girl’s cross country team. They return many varsity runners including their top 3 runners, Juniors Cyrene Nicholas, and Anneliese Troidle, as well as Senior Captain Jess Lohret.
The boys cross country team lead by Luke Arsenault, Ryan Connell, Nathan D’Amico, and Alec Janis are hoping to contend for the Class MM state championship. They lose a key runner in Pat Laske, but have seen growth and improvement in Jackson Mariotti, Aohdan Dunn, and Spencer Mariotti, who have rounded out the varsity seven. On Tuesday, the boys face off against Amity head to head which will be a true test to see how the team looks against an upper echelon team.
The girl’s soccer team looks to continue their winning ways this fall after one of the most successful seasons in their history. They return many seniors whose experience and leadership are pivotal to the success of their season. Although they lose a phenomenal goalie in Becca Vitale, the girls look to continue their success with great defense as well as significant goal scoring.
Boys Soccer is going to be a force to be reckon with this season as a senior-laden group with loads of experience looks to contend for the SCC championship as well as the Class MM state championship. They are a group who has been playing together since the age of 9 or 10, so the team chemistry and unity is very strong. A group that doesn’t really have a weakness on the field is an adequate way to describe the Hornets. Look for big things from boys’ soccer this year as they will be very impressive.
The girl’s field hockey team should have yet another winning season. They captured Coach Cathy McGuirk’s 500th career win last Tuesday against Sacred Heart. A year where powerhouses like Cheshire and Daniel Hand loose many stars, look for the Hornets to swoop in and finish in the top 3 teams in the SCC.
The girl’s volleyball team started their season Tuesday with a 3-0 win over new SCC opponent Laurelton Hall. The Hornets have a very small senior class, but look for a lot of playing time from their juniors and sophomores. They are favorites to win the SCC Oronoque Division. Don’t be surprised if they make a deep run into the postseason as they poised and ready to face stiff competition, and put themselves in a place where they can be successful.
The girl’s swimming and diving team also began their 2014 campaign Tuesday with a nice win of Lyman Hall. Two years removed from a State Championship, they look to get back their winning ways with some great individual performances. The overall team is not what it was two years ago, but Julia Dietz, Page MacNeil, and Erika Maercklein are all swimmers to watch this season. All coming off great years last year, they are looking to continue to get better and become extremely successful.
The Football team is looking to win a game this year. After a horrid defeated season they have matured, and grown into the system Head Coach John Limone implemented last season. Last year was a rebuilding year, where they looked to find talent which they can use this year. They have found enough pieces to win and look to give Limone his first career win as a head coach.
As a whole Branford Fall Sports are yet again flourishing and expecting many exciting games and victories for their fans. Please go out and support the teams. For a complete listing of the fall sports schedule, click here.
