The Spring sports season is now underway and looks to be another successful season for the Branford Hornets. Last spring, the boy’s outdoor track team finished 2nd in Class MM and saw great performances from all of the other spring sports teams.
This year the boy’s outdoor track team wants to repeat the same success as last year being SCC Oronoque Division champions, SCC West sectional champions along with, a runner up finish at the CIAC Class MM State Championships. They have started off the season right so far as they are already 4-0 and looking quite impressive. The girls outdoor track team will continue to get better as the season progresses as they will be in the mix in the championship meets.
The boy’s baseball team is coming off a tough 7-13 season last year, but has a good core of returning players with varsity experience. They are already 2-1 and are hungry for more success as the season continues.
The girl’s softball team has gotten off to a slow yet very competitive start. Although they remain 1-2, they have only lost their two games by a combined 3 runs. The boy’s lacrosse team has split its first 2 games of the season with a win over Hamden and a loss to Amity. Look for them to be hovering around .500 all year, but has the upside to make a Cinderella playoff run.
The girls lacrosse team has been impressive as they 3-0 and playing very well so far this season. The senior leadership of April Simmons, Christina Smith, Jenny Royka, and others have been pivotal in making a skilled team like themselves flow so easily.
The Boys and Girls CO-ED Golf team remains undefeated this season as they are 4-0, with wins over Law, Career, Hillhouse, and Cross.
The boy’s tennis team under new coach and Branford alum Matt Fraenza has started the year very well. 3-0 for a team who has a well rounded team full of good singles players along with some good doubles pairs. The girl’s tennis team is 1-1 with a 7-0 sweep of East Haven and a 6-1 defeat to Cheshire. They will be a team who is right in the middle of the pack in the conference and could set themselves up for a nice couple of matches in the playoffs.
The boys and girls sailing team won their first regatta of the year and will look to have some good races as the season progresses. They are hoping for some good wind on race day to optimize their success.
Please come out and support all of the Branford High School Spring Sports teams as we are looking for another season full of success.
